A Georgia marriage record is a full record that is legal evidence that a marriage occurred. These records contain both Marriage Licenses and Marriage Certificates. These records may be requested as proof of a name change, for genealogical research, or during divorce proceedings.

Like in most other states, marriage records in Georgia are created at the county level. Some Georgia counties kept early marriage bonds before 1805; however, Georgia law did not require marriage licenses to be recorded until 1805. Officials were careless in adhering to the law and some marriages were consequently not recorded.

Marriage records for most Georgia counties (except where records were destroyed by fire or other courthouse disaster) are available on microfilm at the Georgia Archives. The Department of Public Health’s State Office of Vital Records maintains all of Georgia’s birth and death certificates. It also holds marriage records from 1952 to 1996. Although the department can confirm divorces, copies of the records are held by the Clerk of the Superior Court in the county where the divorce was granted.
